Commonly Misused Word and Confusingly Related Word

COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS

Homophone adalah kata-kata yang pelafalannya (sound) sama namun artinya (meaning) berbeda. Adapun ejaannya (spelling) bisa sama atau berbeda. Jika ejaannya sama, homophone termasuk juga dalam homonym dan homograph. Pada definisi yang lebih longgar, homophone disamakan dengan homonym meskipun ejaan kata-katanya berbeda. Karena kemiripan pelafalannya, homophone kerap membingungkan. Dengan mengenal kata-kata tersebut, penulisan yang salah dapat dihindari.  
1. Accept is a verb meaning to receive.
    Except is also a verb meaning to exclude.
    Example :
  • I will accept all the gift from my friends.
  • He used to eat everything except vegetable..
2.  Your is a possessive pronoun.
     Your is a contraction of you are.
     Example :
  • Your brother is very handsome.
  • You're more beautiful than any girls in the world.
3. To is a preposition.
    Too is an adverb.
    Two is a number.
    Example :
  • It's a good way to ask for help.
  • She likes swimming too.
  • Only two cup cakes left.



CONFUSINGLY RELATED WORDS

Ini adalah kata yang menyebabkan masalah ketika pembicara tidak mampu membedakan antara mereka. Mereka adalah sama dalam arti atau pengucapan tetapi tidak dapat digunakan secara bergantian.

1. Affect (verb) to produce a change in.
    Effect (noun) end result or consequence.
    Example :
  • Volcanoes in Kelud can affect the atmosphere.
  • If you want to effect in Indonesia, you have to vote. 
2. Advice (noun) opinion given to someone.
    Advise (verb) act of giving an opinion.
    Example :
  • You should listen to your mother's advice.
  • The doctor advised you to quit smoking.
3.  Access (noun) availability
     Excess (adjective) abundant, superfluos.
     Example :
  • I want to access studentsite.
  • Excess of a merit is a capital offence in morality.
